Children's Chapel: An Age-Appropriate Liturgy for Children
Children perceive faith in a very different way than adults do. Children's chapel introduces the great stories of Holy Scripture in a way that encourages participation, imaginative play, age-appropriate prayers, engaging music, and safe fellowship. The most apparent benefit of Children's Chapel is that parents and grandparents are free to listen to the sermon without distractions, while the children interact with the readings for the day in an engaging way that eliminates boredom and acting out. A more subtle and powerful benefit is the listening to and learning the great stories of Christianity in a fun way. For thousands of years these stories have shaped the faith of billions children. Sadly, many youth today grow up without the Biblical worldview these stories help to shape. As a result, many children don't have a relationship with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
This is how Children's Chapel will work at Grace Church:
1. As soon as the 10:00AM processional makes it to the High Altar, the children come to the front of the Church and follow the crucifer and teachers to the Children's Chapel located in Jackson Hall.
2. At chapel the children will do the introductory rite, will read the Scripture readings for the day, will do a brief and age-appropriate lesson (at about the same time as their parents are listening to the sermon in church,) will pray the children's creed, will do a child-appropriate confession, and will pray for whatever is on their minds in the "prayers of the people." If they have free time, they will do a craft project related to the lesson.
3. At a designated time, the children and teachers will march back into church, arriving at the time of the peace. They will remain with their parents for the remainder of the service.
Ages appropriate for Children's Chapel: The chapel is appropriate for children who are potty-trained (around age 3) through fifth grade. If the group is large enough, the teachers will subdivide the group into two groups: pre-K 3 to second grade and third to fifth grade. Parents of children under three are encouraged to attend Children's chapel with their children and will be treated as volunteers as needed.
Please call Meg Kendrick or Fr. Roldan at 225-635-4065 if you have any questions or if you wish to volunteer. We pray that you will bring your children to church every week and that you will support this new ministry at Grace.
